Hong Kong’s own Neoncity Records is at the centre of a growing genre of feel-good electronic music that is taking inspiration from the forgotten sounds of Japan in its economic bubble era. The genre, dubbed future funk, is an infectious mix of nostalgia, internet culture and upbeat tempos that is bringing music fans’ love of 1980s J-pop and anime to the dance floor.

In the first episode of our new series Cultured, The Post meets Neoncity Records founder Davy Law and learns how the rise of city pop, a genre of breezy soft rock from Japan, gave birth to a new generation of electronic music producers.
