Glasgow Prepares for UN Climate Summit; Animal Activists Scale Government Building | NTD UK News
NTD UK News Full Broadcast: 26 October 2021
Today’s Highlights:
1. Glasgow Prepares for UN Climate Summit
Next week, the UN climate summit will take place in Glasgow. More than 20,000 people, including 120 world leaders are expected to attend. There’s likely to be travel disruption in the city, with planned road closures and strikes from rail workers, as well as the city’s binmen, as they demand higher pay. In what’s seen as a move to manage expectations, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he’s very worried about the success of the summit.
2. Animal Activists Scale Government Building
Four activists from Animal Rebellion, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, climbed a government building in London early this morning. They say they plan to stay on the side of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs building until the prime minister agrees to urge world leaders at COP26 to end animal farming subsidies.
3. Facebook Whistleblower Gives Evidence to MPs
A whistleblower told MPs Facebook is making hate worse. Though it didn't invent hate, she said, the company fails to take down a majority of hate speech, which might lead some people to become radicalised. She said according to Facebook’s own research, Instagram is more dangerous for children than other forms of social media. And she worries it may not be possible to make the platform safe for children.
4. Online Retailer Looks Toward a Robot Future
Online supermarket Ocado wants its London warehouse to be fully automated. Its washing-machine sized robots have caught the eye of international retailers battling a shortage of workers and rising wage demands. And the company doesn't plan to stop there. Eventually it wants machines to replace humans in every stage of the order preparation process as they strive to make online more profitable than in-store.
5. French Families Worry as Energy Bills Soar
Families in France are doing all they can to cut their expenses, but the spiralling cost of electricity is squeezing some household budgets to the point of going broke.
6. ISIS Member Jailed for Death of Yazidi Girl
In what is believed to be the first in the world, a Munich court has sentenced a former member of the ISIS terrorist group for crimes committed against the Yazidi community. The court found a German woman who converted to Islam guilty of allowing a young Yazidi girl she and her husband kept as a slave to die of thirst.
