It was 40 years ago that Richard Nixon left the White House, becoming the only US president ever to resign from office.
The episode dealt a blow to the trust Americans had for their government in Washington - a trust already slipping since the presidencies of Dwight Eisenhower and John F Kennedy.
The Pew Research Center assembled data from 1958 to the present, charting the highs and lows of trust in the federal government.
