In this 2009 documentary, FRONTLINE producers Martin Smith and Marcela Gaviria travel across Afghanistan and Pakistan to see firsthand how President Obama’s strategy took shape, delivering vivid, on-the-ground reporting from the war's many fronts.

In “Obama’s War”, Correspondent Martin Smith interviews top generals, diplomats and government officials to understand the internal debates over President Obama's grand attempt to combat terrorism at its roots. With the brunt of the work falling on rank-and-file soldiers in the unforgiving landscape of Helmand province, the Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan, FRONTLINE embedded with Echo Company of the 2nd Marines, 8th Battalion. Since the Marines' arrival that July, Helmand had become the most lethal battlefield in Afghanistan. But FRONTLINE found the Marines trying to act as armed diplomats, attempting to build the necessary trust for badly needed economic development.

Behind Bars Season 3 - Episode 5: Mandaluyong City, CIW: Locked Up Ladies | 4K Prison Documentary
Behind Bars: Philippines - New Bilibid Prison: https://youtu.be/HgaZTcJMHdc
The "Correctional Institution for Women" is the oldest and largest women's prison in the Philippines, founded in nineteen thirty-one. Designed for one thousand PDLs - "persons deprived of liberty" - today there are about three times as many. Prisoners range from petty criminals to drug dealers, from murderers to gang members. The guards are outnumbered. Your best bet at keeping prisoners under control: Strict rules that everyone must adhere to. Over and over again there are checks, to ensure no one has managed to escape. One hundred percent security is impossible! The inmates are allowed to deal with tools, gas-cannisters and knives. All potentially lethal weapons.
"The bedrooms and living quarters, the so-called "dorms", are spread over several buildings. Among the inmates are also so-called ‚High Value‘ PDL's‘. A huge compound, full of hardened criminals. In a jail where just a few dozen correction officers watch over several thousand prisoners, who roam freely during the day. For keeping control, the guards even work together with privileged inmates, that are allowed to punish the other ones.
This episode of Behind Bars tells not only his story, but also that of the inmates, and the environment of the prison and shows in impressive pictures how life behind bars works.

Sunny is a trans person living in Pakistan. She begs in order to survive. Others get by as sex workers or dancers. As an expert for transgender issues at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Reem Sharif found a way to support her community.
Trans people in Pakistan are frequently cast out by their families and live in poverty. They can find safe spaces and a new family in special centers. Here, they do not have to hide and discover that they are not alone in their fight for survival and recognition in Pakistan’s conservative society.
Only around 10 thousand people of Pakistan’s population of 220 million are officially counted as members of the “third gender,” yet it’s estimated that the true figure may be as high as 300 thousand.

China is one of the world’s most fascinating and complicated countries, and its cities seem to get bigger every year. Considered a rural society just a few decades ago, China today is home to the world’s largest urban population.
In this travel documentary, I take you on a journey through some of the country’s most interesting cities. While many city centers are filled with modern skyscrapers, we also search for more traditional neighborhoods, historic sites, tranquil parks, special events, and cultural activities. We look at the rapid changes China is undergoing in its urbanization process, and mention some of the challenges the country is facing.
From the modern megacities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou we travel to the ancient centers of Beijing and Xian. We visit the popular Summer holiday beaches of coastal Qingdao, and the exciting Winter festivals of Harbin. From the streets of fusion cities like Hong Kong and Macau we continue our journey to Tibetan Lhasa, located on the Rooftop of the World. We also take a look at the disappearing alleys of old Kashgar, in the controversial Xinjiang region, and the empty streets of Ordos, China’s best known ghost town. And we explore the expanding urban centers along the Yangtze river, including Wuhan and Chongqing, all the way to the fast paced metropolis of Shanghai.
I traveled through China independently for more than a decade, on several occasions. The footage in this video was shot between 2010 and 2019, and is accompanied by background information. For more in-depth information on each place, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We begin our journey in Shanghai, one of China’s most remarkable cities. Its skyline has become a symbol for the country’s economic growth. While we look at the modern face of Shanghai, I also visit some more traditional neighborhoods, even though they are disappearing fast.
We travel onwards to Harbin, in the North of China, to visit a spectacular Winter festival, with sculptures and palaces made from ice and snow, which draws millions of tourists every year. Beijing, the nation’s capital, is our next destination. This is the political heart of China, but also brims with culture and creativity.
In Chongqing, located on the mighty Yangtze river, we witness some of the urbanization process, while in Lhasa we look at the traditions and customs of the Tibetan people. We travel onwards to Xian, where we walk on the ancient city walls, eat some delicious food in the Muslim neighborhood, and visit the magnificent Terracotta Army.
After Xian, we travel to Ordos, China’s best known ‘ghost town’. After which we continue our way to Kashgar, in the now controversial Xinjiang region, where the faith of the Uyghur people hangs in the balance. Qingdao is our next destination, one of China’s most beautiful coastal cities, where we also explore some of the suburbs.
Hong Kong is perhaps the perfect mix between East and West. A short ferry ride away, Macau retains some of its Portuguese history, but is also known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’ with its many casinos. Just across the ‘border’ from both, Shenzhen has grown into one of China’s largest and wealthiest cities, while it was just a small fishing village 40 years ago.
The last two cities we visit are Wuhan and Guangzhou, which have their own distinct character. I visited Wuhan before the pandemic broke out, and found a sprawling city. Guangzhou is also a vast metropolis, and is known for its Cantonese culture and cuisine.

Napoli is one of Europe’s most diverse and fascinating cities, and an intriguing place to travel to. Often misunderstood, this Italian city has some of the country’s most beautiful architecture, ancient historic sites, delicious food, interesting traditions, and a friendly, welcoming people. In this travel documentary, I’m exploring the streets of Napoli and its surroundings. From the buzzing, narrow alleys of the old city center to the grand churches and cathedrals. The video was made in March 2023 when I had the chance to travel to Naples and surroundings for 12 days.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start our journey in the old city center of Naples, with its charismatic narrow streets and vibrant markets. This is the beating heart of Napoli, where much of daily life takes place outdoors. After introducing some of the city’s history and culture, I take a food tour around these same streets, going beyond the city’s most famous dish (Margarita pizza). I also try my hand at making pasta myself, with a cooking course that dives deeper into culinary and family life in the region.
You find espresso bars and cafes all over Napoli, but perhaps the most famous one doubles as a shrine to Diego Maradona. This famous football player has received a saint-like status, and you will see his face all around the city. The city’s stadium is also named after him.
While religion plays an important role in society, Neapolitans have a long-standing tradition of mixing Catholic faith with a combination of rituals, legends, myths, and miracles. I dive a little deeper into this, and also visit some of the city’s most interesting churches, like the Duomo Cathedral and the Chiesa del Gesu Nuovo.
The architecture in Napoli resembles the city’s rich and diverse history, and walking through the different neighborhoods almost feels like time traveling. From cloisters and monasteries to forts and palaces, you can find yourself in a different era at every corner of the street.
I also explore the city’s charming coastline, with small fishing ports, hidden beaches, tranquil boulevards, and many restaurants. It’s a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Don’t miss the metro stations, which are an attraction of their own, displaying art and design that could be part of a museum. Finally, I also visit three of the impressive underground tunnels and/or cities, the Bourbon Tunnels, San Gennaro’s Catacombs, and Napoli Sotterranea.
In the second part of the video, I explore some of the most important sights around Napoli, starting with the impressive, yet fearful, Mount Vesuvius. This volcano is one of the most active in the world. Its most violent (and well known) eruption was in 79AD, which devastated Roman cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum. Interestingly, both these places are well preserved (due to a layer of volcanic ash and pumice that ‘protected’ much of the sites).
After visiting those, we explore the coastline, with the charming villages and imposing mountains of the Amalfi coast, including the towns of Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi. This is also one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations. I finish this journey on the attractive island of Procida, which is less visited by tourists than the 2 bigger islands in the region. It’s full of historic buildings, scenic vistas, black sand beaches, and a laidback atmosphere.

Alpine Rivers: The Cradle if Life | Nature Documentary
Watch 'Alpine Lakes - An Enchanting Underwater World' here: https://youtu.be/cFWfs5KgS2g
What would happen to the mountains without water? They would turn into deserts, devoid of life and vegetation. But there are very few mountains without water on our planet. They take care of this themselves, creating their life’s element and taking water directly from the sky by entrapping the clouds around them.
This water then collects on the flanks of the mountains, where it turns from rivulets into rivers, that flow out into the oceans. Mountains and water are symbiotic, a cycle that keeps life on earth going. Mountain streams slowly move along meadows before, only moments later, turning into the spray of waterfalls or small mystic lakes. What kind of life can be found in and around this mysterious cosmos?
We will investigate the world of the rare Danube salmon and be there to see the Danube bleak spawn. We will follow giant wels catfish into their hideouts, see great crested grebes on their underwater hunting. We go diving under the ice of frozen mountain streams and lakes, discovering life where none was thought possible.

The jungle between Colombia and Panama, the Darién Gap, is one of the most important migration routes in the world. And one of the most dangerous.
In the hope of a better life in the US, more than half a million people made their way through the rainforest separating Panama and Colombia in 2023 alone. The terrain is muddy and steep, and families with children quickly fall by the wayside. At the same time, drug cartels and armed gangs are also fighting for supremacy in the Darién Gap. Antonia Schaefer and Oliver Schmieg accompanied several migrants.

🌍 Six continents separated by vast expanses of water - this is the familiar image of our planet that we have all shared since childhood. But the Earth hasn't always looked like this. Over the past 4.6 billion years, our planet has gone through many geological eras. During some of these eras, almost the entire surface was covered with ice, while in other periods, on the contrary, the polar caps melted completely.
In the distant past, the continents were not arranged as they are today. Land blocks moved relative to each other, which led to movement, collision of continents and the emergence of supercontinents that united almost all the landmasses.
🔥 As a reminder, videos are published on SUNDAYS at 6:00 PM.

💥 Pangea:
- The word "Pangea" comes from the Greek words Pan (meaning "all") and Gaia (meaning "earth"), which means "all the lands". This name perfectly refers to the supercontinent, as Pangea was once one land, since all the lands were then gathered in one place.
A supercontinent is a continent composed of most or all of the Earth's land mass. The most recent supercontinent to include all of Earth's major landmasses and arguably the most famous was Pangea. Supercontinents have sporadically joined and broken up over the course of Earth's geologic history.
Recall that the geologic history of the Earth is a sequence of events in the development of the Earth as a planet. Among these events are the formation of rocks, the emergence and destruction of landforms, the advance and retreat of the seas, ice ages, and the appearance and disappearance of species of living beings.
The most modern definition emphasizes that the supercontinent is a geological formation that, with its structure, affects the distribution of heat flows, air masses of the Earth, etc. It is a large structure, but it does not necessarily unite all the continental blocks.
In the distant past, all the continents formed a single whole, the supercontinent Pangea. This huge continent began to form about 335 million years ago, during the Paleozoic period.
During the process of formation of Pangea from older continents, mountain systems appeared on the places of their collision, some of them still exist today, for example the Urals or the Appalachians.
These early mountains are much older than the relatively young mountain systems such as the Alps in Europe, the Cordillera in North America, the Andes in South America or the Himalayas in Asia. Due to erosion over millions of years, the Urals and the Appalachians are now low mountains.
Most of this supercontinent was concentrated in the southern hemisphere. The only ocean that surrounded it was called "Panthalassa".
Life during Pangea was different from today. The climate was warmer and the fauna and flora were completely different.
Pangea split about 150 to 220 million years ago into two continents. The northern continent of Laurasia then split into Eurasia and North America, while the southern continent of Gondwana then gave rise to Africa, South America, India, Australia and Antarctica.
Supercontinents existed earlier, for example Rodinia, which disintegrated about 750 million years ago, and according to some predictions, in the future, the continents will reunite into a supercontinent called "Pangea Ultima" in about 250 million years, when Africa, America and Eurasia will collide.
