It is a road of mountain passes and India’s access to the roof of the world – the Himalayas. This 475-kilometre long route at the northernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent connects the cities of Manali and Leh at the heart of the Ladakh region. The term “highway” applies quite literally, since the route traverses five of the highest drivable mountain passes in the world – among these the Lohtang La at 3,978 metres above sea level, the Lachulung La at 5,059 metres and the Tanglang La at 5,325 metres. Crossing these passes is a challenge for both vehicle and man. The mountain peaks, still snow-capped even in the depths of summer, wide variety of vegetation and the fantastic and craggy landscape turn any journey into a captivating adventure.

Every morning, the three sisters Julia, Yulissa and Kenya climb into their dugout in order to row to school. They live on the east coast of Nicaragua, one of the world’s poorest countries, and the youngest of them has just turned five; the oldest is nine. They row across the Rio Escondido. Not only is it one of the largest rivers in the country, it is simultaneously one of the most dangerous routes to school. While they have to watch out for snakes lurking in the trees over the river, the three sisters also struggle against the current and must ensure the dugout does not fill up with water - because it has multiples holes and could sink at any minute.

Other classmates do not necessarily have it easier, because they live far from the river, and their journey to school takes them through the deep jungle. One of these classmates is 11-year-old Greyven. His daily trip takes him through the so-called ‘snake field’, in which coral snakes and the infamous boa constrictor reside. On the way to school, the rain drives the snakes from the empty coconuts on the ground; on the way back the afternoon heat, which is over 35 degrees, means that they are lively and belligerent.

The daily journey – ashore and to water – to San Mariano’s small village school is an adventure almost unimaginable to us. Every time they undertake this trip, the children expose themselves to life-threatening dangers, all for the chance to have a better future.

Caught between hostile government troops and a rebel army that intimidates as much as it protects, things aren't looking good for the Nuer people of South Sudan. NGOs have been attacked, causing them to flee the region. Those that suffer the most are the destitute and the desperate, who so needed the aid that has just been pushed out.

For years, Detroit has been considered one of the most dangerous cities in the USA – and especially infamous is Seven Mile Road. This area is so tough that even the police only dare tread during the day. Ruled by the Seven Mile Bloods. One of the most notorious gangs in the city. Drug dealers, hustlers, killers and thieves – prepared to do whatever it takes to defend their territory. For over ten years gang leader Money controls the drug trade with an iron fist. A bloody territorial war keeps the gang in turmoil. To keep their rivals in check, boss Money needs a steady flow of new weapons. Only with the requisite firepower can they continue to dominate their territory and the other gangs – because the touch-paper might light at any moment. The violent crime rate in Detroit is five times higher than the rest of the country. In two thousand eighteen, over thirteen thousand crimes were reported, many more occurred. Seven Mile in particular is the front line for the bloody territorial battles that brutally define this no-go zone. For the police, every assignment is a risk, which is why bounty hunters are often used to go after criminals. A special unit of bounty hunters prepares for their next assignment on the outskirts of downtown. Tommy Depung leads the unit. So far, he’s arrested over twenty-five hundred criminals. Together with his team, they´re following a hot tip about a wanted drug and weapons dealer, and it’s taking them straight into the no-go zone…

But there are a few adventurous souls who risk it all in this green hell every day. They are the drivers of enormous logging trucks that can carry up to 40 tons of wood at a time.

It is on these giant logs that the entire country’s fortunes depend. The drivers race across the country in these huge machines to take the exotic wood from the Forest of Bees logging sites to Gentil port; it is a 350km feat of endurance and skill that is not for the faint hearted.

Peace is often fleeting in the natural world, however, and shortly after the deer begin their morning drink, they find themselves bolting back into the undergrowth to safety. A flock of birds has disturbed them from their gathering, sent soaring into the warm morning air by something huge moving through the undergrowth. Like something from a hollywood film, the bushes across the stream rattle and rustle, progressively faster, until a tall black shadow can be seen emerging from the tangle of bamboo and leaves. It's a primate - a colossal, reddish coloured, muscular, powerful primate. As its face steadily unsheaths itself from the greenery, it looks almost human - a kind, slow expression spreads across its huge cheeks as it too, pauses to check for tigers.

With none in sight, the primate - Gigantopithecus, a huge, extinct ape - can descend to the stream to drink. As a lone, adult male, this is his territory, and he will spend the morning coursing it for food and water. Although the terrified hoofed mammals are long gone, they needn't have worried - Gigantopithecus is a strict vegetarian, and would have at best just ushered them along so he could have drank in peace. Instead, this giant ape stands tall and proud in his forest home - he is one of the most remarkable animals living in these forests, and there is little that can do him harm.

Pushing through a lofty bamboo thicket, he soon finds himself in a densely surrounded forest clearing, surrounded by others of his kind - his family. Several females, a few yound males and some youngsters, born just last year, are at his command. As the leader of his troop, he will defend them from rival males and predators fiercely, siring as many of his family's children as he can within the constraints of his reign. He, and his kind, are the largest primates ever to live.
