Go Ape - The Fascinating World of Primates | Wildlife Documentary

Everyone loves a cheeky monkey. Primates are fun and fascinating to watch. But there is a greater
draw – perhaps because they bring out the inner primate in us. Through Africa, South America and Asia, our wild cousins are far more diverse than you might think. Ever adaptable masters of survival, we enjoy watching their lives, but in doing so, we might learn a little bit about ourselves…

Our journey begins in the heart of Africa, where a troop of Eastern Lowland gorillas welcome a new arrival. Everyone in the clan rush to greet the baby, revealing their very human instincts to work together to nurture and protect their family.

While gorillas lead through gentle nurturing, they share their forest with a much more aggressive
cousin, the chimpanzee. Chimps rule with an iron fist, literally beating their opponents into
submission. Chimpanzee have another close relative, the bonobo, which looks almost exactly the
same but exhibits very different behavior. Any disruption in a chimpanzee family will lead to
violence, but bonobo’s defuse tension and avoid conflict through sex. Any age or gender can mate
with any other, making these the king of the swingers.

From obesity to alcohol misuse, from rotting baby teeth to hearing problems caused by passive smoking – Britain’s largest children’s hospital is treating younger and younger patients for health problems that are ultimately preventable. Many are the result of kids’ lifestyles and are, according to the experts, causing them unnecessary suffering.

With unprecedented access to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, this documentary meets the kids, the pediatricians treating them, and follows them home in an attempt to uncover the root cause of their problems. It is clear that some of the basic health messages from the doctors are not getting through to parents.

The A&E is a busy department and having to deal with cases such as drunk children is not only time-consuming for staff but can be upsetting for other young patients too. Operations on dental, glue ear, and obesity cases are helping clog up a system that’s already under considerable strain. The hospital estimates they spend around a million pounds a year on treating preventable conditions, enough to buy them a new MRI scanner.

An underwater adventure in search of living fossils. The island of New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean sits on the equator, where immediately next to a richly-colored coral reef, a sharp underwater cliff drops down to 1,000 meters. A long-awaited exploration down the little known depths of this tropical sea is finally about to start. NHK has teamed up with eminent marine biologist Mark Erdmann, discoverer of the coelacanth in Indonesia. The spherical transparent submarine, which successfully captured the world’s first moving images of a giant squid in its natural habitat, is used as the team encounters true living fossil species one after another. During their last dive, in the darkest depths of caves in the deep-sea cliff, the crew encounters a huge, unknown exotic fish…

Narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

For this shoot, the submarine was equipped with a cutting-edge 4K camera, for pristine images. Join the film crew on an exciting adventure into a deep sea never before seen by humans, captured on six cameras shooting multi-angles, creating a breath-taking underwater documentary.

Part 1: The Lost World Of The Pacific
The same submarine which successfully captured the world’s first moving images of a giant squid in its natural habitat is used for exploring the deep sea cliffs off the coast of New Guinea. The team encounters true living fossil species one after another. Join this exciting deep sea adventure

Part 2: Lights in the Abyss
The NHK team that captured the world’s first footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat is setting out for another deep-sea adventure. They will give us a look at the amazing life forms with luminous bodies that have survived the harsh, pitch-dark deep sea environment of the Pacific.

40% of the global population is overweight or obese. Highly processed industrial foodstuffs are largely to blame. But food companies continue to focus on products that are addictive.

Sugar is one of the strongest "drugs” and can get consumers really hooked. Food giants know this only too well. That’s why they use sugar, fats and flavor enhancers to encourage people to buy their products and boost their profits. The result: more and more people around the world are overweight or obese. Illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease are becoming more prevalent. What can be done to change or even put a stop to the food industry’s strategies?

The now defunct town of Picher, Oklahoma was once considered the most toxic place in the United States. Decades of lead and zinc mining scarred the landscape, with scattered 200-foot-tall mountains of waste sitting on top of severely undermined land and highly acidic water flowing through and out.

The decline of mining activities and subsequent abandonment of mine shafts and waste resulted in widespread toxic metal and sulfuric acid contamination over decades - an active contamination that continues to this day. At the time of its placement on the EPA’s National Priority List and its designation as a superfund site in 1983, it was considered the worst active environmental disaster in the United States. Despite this distinction, the EPA dragged their feet on cleanup for decades, turning a blind eye wherever convenient, all while barring the Quapaw landowners from participating and contributing to cleanup efforts.

The massive piles of mining waste, otherwise known mine tailings, or “chat,” contain dangerous concentrations of lead, zinc, and cadmium. And the effects of these toxic metals would become tragically apparent due to a growing number of health problems in children living in and around the waste.

This documentary tells the story of how a small town in northeast Oklahoma became the most toxic town in America, what effects that toxicity has had on residents, the decades of ongoing and fragmented cleanup efforts, and what the future holds for the Tar Creek Superfund site.

The Wild Soul of the Everglades National Park | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'Saguaro - The Unexpected Beauty of America's Forgotten National Park' here: https://youtu.be/sV_6cvXPE34

North America’s National Parks are world famous and their breathtaking landscapes fascinate millions of visitors. This spectacular series will show you what happens beyond the lookouts.

Everglades National Park is an American national park that protects the southern twenty percent of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States, and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. An average of one million people visit the park each year. Everglades is the third-largest national park in the contiguous United States after Death Valley and Yellowstone. UNESCO declared the Everglades & Dry Tortugas Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1979, while the Ramsar Convention included the park on its list of Wetlands of International Importance in 1987. Everglades is one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Most national parks preserve unique geographic features; Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing 0.25 miles per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere. Thirty-six threatened or protected species inhabit the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, along with 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.

Humans have lived for thousands of years in or around the Everglades. Plans arose in 1882 to drain the wetlands and develop the land for agricultural and residential use. As the 20th century progressed, water flow from Lake Okeechobee was increasingly controlled and diverted to enable explosive growth of the South Florida metropolitan area. The park was established in 1934, to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades, and dedicated in 1947, as major canal building projects were initiated across South Florida. The ecosystems in Everglades National Park have suffered significantly from human activity, and restoration of the Everglades is a politically charged issue in South Florida.

On May 9th 1945, the Japanese Heavy Cruiser Haguro deployed into the malacca strait from Singapore. It was to be the ships’ last voyage. A few days later, Haguro was ambushed by a flotilla of Allied destroyers, who used dozens of torpedoes and heavy gunfire to sink her, over the course of an hour-long battle where Haguro’s crew made their final stand.

Highway to the Arctic: Canada's Ice Roads

World’s Most Dangerous Roads | The Canadian Ice Roads: https://youtu.be/UCkhwkZvCJw

Every winter, ice roads are built across hundreds of miles in Canada's far north, connecting frozen rivers and lakes, and stretching up to the very northern tip of the country by the Arctic Ocean. For the people living in the remote villages of this region these “ice highways” are of vital importance. Until April, trucks are coming up here all the way from down south, bringing supply goods for the whole year to these locals, and life changes until the ice roads are melting again and disappearing into the ocean.

For decades, ice roads have been built across the icy tundra in Canada's far north, the Northwest Territories, every single winter. These so-called "ice highways" lead to a remote and inhospitable world impresses everyone with its raw beauty. It is a cold primeval world, almost unimaginable for Europeans these days, yet people are actually living there. The locals, who have settled in remote villages up here, have adjusted to the Arctic nature; the ice roads are their temporary connection to the outside world. While life in summertime can be tough and arduous, winter allows the locals to replenish their stocks, easily reach remote hunting grounds and turns the ice roads into a place for fairs where people can celebrate life and their culture.

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

Tens of thousands are missing, many more murdered. So why are Mexico’s violent drug cartels operating with impunity? We go inside the most powerful cartel to meet the footsoldiers. Corruption, they say, goes right to the top. Produced in collaboration with Ben Zand and Vice TV.

In Mexico’s Sinaloa state, violence has become a way of life.
Home to the country’s most powerful drug syndicate, the Sinaloa cartel, murders and disappearances are rife.

The police, meant to protect the population, are often the targets of violence. Over 500 officers were killed in Mexico last year.

They’re also often complicit, with corruption in the police force and government a major problem. In this shocking portrait of a country caught in the grip of organised crime, reporter Ben Zand takes us where few have gone – inside the Sinaloa cartel in the Sierra Madre mountains where he witnesses the group’s operations up close.

At their hidden base, the group grows poppies and marijuana for export, fends off outsiders with guns and bribes visiting police and security officers with money and women.

“The government is the one in charge” say the local leader. “The cartel is only as big as the government wants us to be.”

Commentator and writer Ioan Grillo believes that the police and military used to have the upper hand with the cartels but says that’s now changed.

“Some of the cartels have become much more powerful,” says Grillo. “[now] the cartel is actually bullying and controlling elements of the security forces.”

It’s the community who’s paying the price for corruption and impunity.
Mirna Quiñones’ son disappeared suddenly 7 years ago. When police refused to help her, she set out to find him herself.

She went on to set up the Trackers of El Fuerte group which helps parents looking for their children. In the last seven years of searching, they’ve uncovered over two hundred bodies.

“There is no justice. We all know that. I have been threatened by the municipal police here. The government and crime are united.”

Interior Minister, Olga Sánchez Cordero, concedes there is corruption. “The trials, and the investigations, are deficient”, she says. “Lawyers are threatened. Judges are threatened. That is just the reality.”

But she maintains the government is doing its best to investigate the cartels and to undermine their support base.

Investigative journalist Anabel Hernández disagrees, saying she has little faith the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, elected two and half years ago, will tackle the problem.

“He promised to do something different but….it’s just the same. Nothing changed. In some parts it's worse."
