Can the aging process be reversed - or even halted, altogether? If we manage to decode this final mystery of our human biology, we might soon be able to eradicate age-related illnesses like cancer, dementia and heart problems.

The race to invent the miracle pill is well underway. Today, international researchers are getting astonishingly close to realizing humanity’s dream of immortality.

The hunt for immortality gained traction with the discovery of Costa Rica’s so-called "Blue Zone,” by Luis Rosero-Bixby. In the "Blue Zone,” on the Nicoya Peninsular, he found a remarkable number of centenarians. Here, male life expectancy is the highest in the world. Their healthy lifestyle is one factor, but the promise of longevity is probably also because their telomeres - sections of DNA found at the end of chromosomes - are longer than those of the average person.

It’s a field of research currently being explored by Maria Blasco in Madrid. But this is just one of many possible factors influencing the process of aging. Senescent cells may also play a key role. Also known as "zombie cells”, these attack our body in old age and flood it with alarm signals until, at some point, we collapse under their weight. That’s a theory proposed by another researcher in Spain, Manuel Serrano.

A billion-dollar industry is already knocking impatiently at the lab doors. The first to market the miracle pill is guaranteed incredible wealth. That’s why investors are sponsoring young bio-startups in Hong Kong. Keen not be left out, US Big Tech is vying for the world’s best scientists. Alex Zhavoronkov has secured a slice of that pie, with a cash injection of more than 250 million dollars for his company’s work on aging research.

Whereas some pioneers’ visions burst like bubbles, others rush to get other, rather more dubious products onto the market. But their efficacy is now measurable. The epigenetic clock devised by Steve Horvath can measure our biological age, regardless of our actual age in years.

With his research on the thymus gland, California’s Greg Fahy managed to not only decelerate the aging process, but reverse it. His initial study on humans showed that a particular drug cocktail took an average two-and-a-half years off their age.

Young biohackers like Nina Khera from Boston want everyone to benefit from this research. Together with friends, she’s working on the "epigenetic clock for all”.
But while we’re busy trying to counter the aging process and all the illnesses it entails, fundamental questions arise: Should we be messing with nature like this? Are we about to overwhelm the planet with more and more people? Criminal biologist Mark Benecke in Cologne says that these questions are coming far too late.

The country has seen the largest lifting of people out of poverty that has ever taken place in human history, and today China is a global force, predicted to become the world’s biggest economy in a couple of decades.

So how did an impoverished and backward communist country become an engine of global capitalism? What actually happened 40 years ago to set China on the road to prosperity?

Michael Wood talks to the people who were there; the men and women who had been sent to be ‘re-educated ‘on farms and in factories; the farmers who defied the government and broke with communism; the woman has given the very first private business certificate; and the US technical advisor sent to China by the UN to kickstart the change. He travels across the country to meet China’s highest-ranking female diplomat and the people who worked with Premier Deng Xiaoping. The film mixes these testimonies with a fascinating archive of the Chinese leader meeting President Carter in Washington and on fact-finding missions in Japan and Singapore. Interviews too with Deng’s biographer, Professor Ezra Vogel from Harvard University and Ambassador James Stapleton-Roy who lifts the lid on the intensive work behind the scenes which led to the US recognizing the People’s Republic of China in 1979.

The second part of the film looks at the results of those initiatives in today’s China, visiting high-tech global giants Tencent and Alibaba and China’s top universities Tsinghua and SUStech. We visit a high-speed rail workshop and the world’s fastest-growing container port; we interview the American lawyer who set up the first Chinese deals for multinationals including Exon Mobile and Roche Pharmaceuticals. Finally, we ask Robert Daly the Director of the Kissinger Institute on China and Ambassador Roy where they think China is heading, and if political reform will be on the agenda any time soon.

China’s decision to open up to the world 40 years ago has been called ‘the most important event of modern world history’, and it is one in which America played a crucial role. Night horror accident kills 15 people after a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in collided with a bus along the Nakuru- Eldoret Highway

This viral video of a Sikh college student getting arrested for wearing a kirpan at a US university sparked outrage around the world. While a Twitter user said he had worn his kirpan for five years at the same university without any issue, others said the universities there should teach students about the religious practices of minorities. The video has garnered over three million views on Twitter. The kirpan is a ceremonial dagger carried by Sikhs who undergo the ceremony of “Amrit Chakhna” (baptism in Sikhs). Following this, they must possess 5 articles of faith: karha (a steel bracelet), kachha (underpants), kanga (a wooden comb), kesh (hair) — they can’t cut their hair — and the kripan (a dagger). This is said to embody the Sikh principles of faith, wisdom and warrior.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is briefing his cabinet about the likelihood of military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

A briefing at the Pentagon in Washington is also getting under way.

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been targeting Israeli-owned or Israel-bound vessels to show their support for the Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas since the start of the war in Gaza in October.

Bluey and Bingo are living on a desert island in the back garden when they discover Dad washed up on the beach.

The Heelers play a game of 'Bus' with Dad as the driver, Mum as a regular passenger and Bluey and Bingo as...the Grannies!

Bluey and Bingo want to play restaurant with Grandad, but it's a little different than he's used to... he's going to need an app to order the food!

Dad agrees to take Bluey and Bingo to the shops to buy ice cream if they can get him into the car. Only problem is... he's just entered 'Ragdoll' mode!

Curry Quest
When they go on a curry swap to Mackenzie's house through the park, Bingo and Dad must brave a swooping magpie protecting its nest.

Born Yesterday
Dad pretends he was born yesterday. Bluey and Bingo have to guide him through his second day on Earth, especially when he discovers food is delicious and steals Lucky's Dad's pie.
