Every night, as most of us head home, janitors across America, many of them women, begin their night shift. They are often alone or isolated in empty buildings — and vulnerable to sexual violence. (Aired 2018)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: http://www.pbs.org/donate.
Following up on the award-winning collaboration that produced “Rape in the Fields/Violación de un Sueño” in 2013, FRONTLINE, Univision, the Investigative Reporting Program (IRP) at UC Berkeley, Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) and KQED teamed up to uncover the sexual abuse of immigrant women, often undocumented, who clean the malls where we shop, the banks where we do business and the offices where we work. Drawing on interviews with the women themselves, an attorney for the federal agency that enforces sexual harassment laws in the workplace and a watchdog group that monitors workplace conditions for janitors, the investigation sheds light on an underreported problem — and reveals how employers have fallen short in dealing with it.

Afghanistan has one of the world’s highest drug addiction rates. According to the Taliban, there are an estimated four million drug addicts across the country.
Babrak, a former mujahideen fighter, used to be one of them. Now, he is committed to supporting addicts to detox in one of the capital’s under-resourced drug rehabilitation hospitals.
Since the Taliban took power in 2021, international aid has been withdrawn and public services are on the brink of collapse. Babrak and a handful of medical staff struggle to offer a line of hope as the Taliban's anti-drug policies are put into action.

Nearly half a million people in America’s prisons and jails were dealing with mental illness in 2005. FRONTLINE examined mental health in the prison system. (Aired 2005)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate
When “The New Asylums” was originally released, 16 percent of America’s prison population could be classified as having a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder, according to National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The numbers were much higher when taking into consideration other types of mental illnesses and disorders.
As sheriffs and prison wardens became the unexpected and ill-equipped gatekeepers of this burgeoning population, they raised a troubling issue: were jails and prisons turning into America’s new mental hospitals?
With unprecedented access to prison therapy sessions, mental health treatment meetings, crisis wards, and prison disciplinary tribunals, FRONTLINE went inside Ohio’s state prison system to present a searing exploration of the complex topic of mental health behind bars and a moving portrait of the individuals at the center of this issue.

Behind Bars Season 2 - Episode 2: South Cotabato Jail, Philippines | Prison Documentary
Banged Up: My Story - Toughest Stories from Behind Bars: https://youtu.be/m2VF1ATnrdY
Note: This is a reupload. Due to the episode's subject matter we had to make some adjustments to make the video available on YouTube.
Behind Bars: South Cotabato Jail. One of the most overcrowded prisons in the world. Murderers, rapists, and drug dealers. The guilty and the innocent. All are behind bars together. In a jail designed for 600 prisoners, more than 2000 inmates are crammed into cells the size of shoe boxes. The prison is bursting at the seems, and there is no hope of improvement. For the inmates have not even been convicted. Thanks to President Duterte’s war on drugs, the Filipino justice system is totally overwhelmed. Instead of only putting those convicted behind bars, thousands of accused individuals are forced to await a verdict together in inhuman conditions: cramped space, tropical heat, insufficient water, and, worst of all, a jail that is ruled by the inmates. The guards can’t control the mass of prisoners. As a result, the jail is dominated by hierarchies and power relations.
Ronniel Dumagit doesn’t yet know what awaits him. He’s a newbie. It’s his first time in jail. But faster than he’d like he’ll learn how the prison works, what the hierarchy looks like, and how he has to behave in order to survive.
One prisoner decides what status and privileges each of the other inmates have inside the prison. They call him El Presidente: Glecerio de Pedro and his henchmen rule the prison. The guards are totally outnumbered. They use surprise inspections to try to increase their authority, but they can’t change the situation. Nor can they do anything about the daily struggle for survival, for space, for air.

Eagles: The Kings of the Sky | Free Wildlife Documentary
Watch: "The Golden Eagle: King of the Mountains" here: https://youtu.be/hjT4wMkjfwM
Whether in Alaska or in the Dolomites, eagles are generally seen as Kings of the skies. This film devotes itself on the one hand to the bald eagle, the heraldic bird of the United States, and on the other, the Golden Eagle, Europe's largest predatory bird. Many bald eagles live in the Chilkoot State Park in Alaska's south. In fact, more than 400 pairs reside there for the entire year. With a wingspan of some 2.5 metres, they are amongst the largest of their species. The offspring have to leave the eyrie by September at the latest, as then, winter sets in.
On clear, starry nights, one can experience the Northern Lights. There are certain places where especially many eagles group. 3000 to 4500 of them. Because, beneath the Chilkat ice blanket, chum salmon feel at home. The reason for this is the volcanic activity of the surrounding areas. Hot sources feed the different tributaries of the Chilkat. It is the fourth and final salmon migration of the year - nowhere else does this take place so late in the year.
This combination of ice-free water and spawning fish facilitates the survival of many young eagles through their first winter. In the Dolomites, we observe a Golden Eagle couple and their offspring. The strategy of hunter and hunted is impressively documented. For the very first time we experience a groundhog's fight for survival, attempting to flee the eagles' eyrie at a height of 2000 meters, despite the fact this means confrontation with the eagle's offspring. Golden Eagles have virtually conquered the entire northern hemisphere. But the future hunting grounds of the young eagles belongs to the most beautiful: the Dolomites - as majestic as the Kings of the skies.

Jaafar Abdul Karim travels through one of the smallest countries in Europe: Malta. The Romans, the Arabs, the British and the French have all left their mark here. A sunny country with a multicultural heritage.
Jaafar Abdul Karim starts his journey in the capital, Valetta. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has been extensively restored and renovated. Architect Konrad Buhagiar played a major role in this. He shows Jaafar Valetta's most beautiful places, where old and new architecture come together.
In Siggiewi, the presenter meets Marilu Vella and the two cook a very special local dish: pastizzi. The dumplings are a favorite snack of the Maltese.
The island nation has been a member of the EU since 2008. And here - in a tax haven - people like to show off what they've got. But Malta also has its dark sides: At the end of 2017, a murder shook Maltese politics and plunged the country into a crisis. Journalist Daphne Galizia uncovered one of Malta's biggest corruption scandals. Shortly after, she was the victim of a car bomb.
Deeply shaken by this story, Jaafar takes the ferry to Gozo. The second largest island in the Maltese archipelago is only 14 kilometers long, but it has two large opera houses. Jaafar Abdul Karim finds out why from the artistic director John Galea.
This Mediterranean island is one of the sad hotspots in the refugee crisis. Tens of thousands of people have drowned in recent years trying to reach Europe. Time and again, ships that have rescued survivors from the Mediterranean dock there. Jaafar Abdul Karim talks to survivors and Maltese photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi, who has captured moments of the refugee drama in pictures.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Somaliland (2013)
Deadliest Roads - All Episodes: https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLLgqOez346Z
Despite separating from Somalia over 20 years ago, the state of Somaliland is still unrecognised by the rest of the world. Life here is hard. The popular series Dicing with Death brings us an eye-opening look at life in a country that isn’t officially a country.
Due to lack of infrastructure and leftover mines from the civil war delivery drivers in Somaliland take their lives in their hands each time they cross the desert. Before the lorries, transporting goods was done by camel, nowadays Somaliland is one of the main exporters of camels to the rest of the middle east; it is said here that both eating their meat and drinking their milk will make you virile. Somaliland is one of the biggest consumers of the plant khat which when chewed gives a cocaine-like high. The plant quickly loses its potency and so the delivery drivers must race to get their product to the distributors, rather than stopping they just throw the bundles off the side of the moving trucks; with clamouring customers waiting eagerly for each drop off.
But life may be about to change here as supposedly there is a lot of oil under the ground, an as yet untapped resource which may one day bring Somaliland the wealth and recognition it craves.

PLEASE HELP SUPPORT MY WORK, buy me a coffee here: https://ko-fi.com/gavinhoffman
Ayahausca is a traditional plant medicine from the Amazon used to treat a variety of physical and psychology illnesses and conditions. This film explores the use of the Ayahausca as a holistic medicine, challenging stigmas around its use and helping people become more conscious and ethical consumers of the plant if that's the path they choose.
This documentary doesn't cover everything you need to be aware of if you are considering work with Ayahuasca. Please do your research.

Directors note: This note is to address the many comments about the obvious lack of female and indigenous representation in this documentary. I was at this retreat for my own personal development and happened to have my camera with me. Half way through the retreat I made a spontaneous decision to make this documentary during a conversation. I had never made a documentary before, I had never really thought about what goes into making a documentary and I was too caught up in my own process to really think about what I was doing at the time. I asked several people for interviews who all happened to be men and by the time I realized I hadn't asked any women it was too late. I also tried to get an interview with Don Rober but that didn't happen for several reasons. I made this documentary alone, with few resources and no budget and in the interest of getting it finished in this lifetime I went with what I had and finish the film that I had committed to make. I did my best with what I had.
PS. If anyone is willing to translate the subtitles to any other languages please reach out to me!! Thanks so much

Siberia. Endless vastness – arctic temperatures. Even farther East than Japan and 5 000 kilometres north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, the coldest republic of Russia. Yakutsk is the capital of the Yakutia republic and is located about 5100 kilometres east of Moscow. In the midst of it: Oimjakon. With its 500 residents the coldest inhabited place on earth. This village lies in a mountain valley on the upper reaches of the banks of the Indgirka River. One of the major reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the humidity that the Ocean provides to a major part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains shield Siberia against the warm air from the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the door to the Artic stands wide open. Thus in the winter, cold masses of air expand into the Siberian landscape completely unrestricted.
The average temperature in winter: Minus 40° Celsius. The children of the Siberian Oimjakon have the world`s coldest way to school. The extreme living conditions are completely normal for the residents of Oymyakon. This is also true for the Tariks family and their son Aljosha. He is 8 years old. The children of his age group are only excused from attending school on account of the cold at temperatures below minus 54° degrees.
Even before his departure for school Aljosha feels the grim cold. Lacking running water the house also has no bathroom. So Aljosha alredy has to go outside – to the unheated outside earth closet in the garden. Sascha’s mother cooks tea. In order to do so, she must go to outside to the front of the house, which is made of wood- as all houses in Oymyakon. Due to the great temperature differences here, concrete walls would soon crack and be destroyed. In the short summers, it can get quite warm in Oymyakon. In front of the wooden house the ice blocks are stored. The next-door farmer had cut out of the frozen river for them. There is no running water in the Pole of Cold, with temperatures dropping to -65 degrees Celsius; no pipe work has a chance. Aljoshas mother puts the ice in the pot and cooks some tea for her son.
Like every day, Aljosha must get ready to go to school. Like the majority of the other students, Sascha wears for the most part his traditional dress. The clothing prescribes to the onion-peel principle in order to protect the students from the Artic temperatures. His mother Irina has heated up the living room to 20° degrees. So when Aljosha opens the front door it is 70° degrees colder – every day life in Oimjakon. As soon as the children open the dormitory’s double doors, the icy cold brutally grabs hold of them. Within less than one second their nostrils become frozen.
Unlike the students in other parts of the world, the children from Oymyakon are seldom playful but instead very concentrated on their way to school. With quick steps, they travel in groups, attempting to put the 2 kilometer route behind them as quickly as possible. There are no signs of snow ball fights. The don’t spend a second of time watching the cows, which are kept up to nine months of the year in their stalls, and are now coincidentally being lead out of the barn for a drink. Even though the cows are wearing some sort of special “bras” which protect their udders from freezing.
Once in school building, Aljosha and the other students remove many of their layers of clothing, and get going with the school lessons. For the majority of them, a welcome diversion from the coldest inhabited town on the earth.
Gripping documentary exploring the stories of five exceptionally talented people, investigating where their amazing skills came from and finding out if they and their families can ever have normal lives.
