The 20-year-old male who shot at former US president Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania rally is alleged to be Thomas Matthew Crooks, according to The New York Post.

However, US authorities have not confirmed the shooter’s identity but claim they are close to determining who the person was.

An image has now surfaced showing US authorities standing over what is believed to be the corpse of the shooter.

WARNING: Graphic Content. Gunfire appeared to erupt at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania while he was speaking on stage — and he was grazed in the ear, law enforcement said.

What sounded like gunshots rang out just about five minutes into his speech shortly after 6 p.m., sending Trump to the ground as Secret Service agents jumped in to cover him. Sources said the investigation is ongoing and they are looking into if the shots were from a BB gun.

Trump appeared to grab his ear in the moments before he was taken to the floor by the Secret Service. He was heard asking for his shoes as the guards rushed him away.

A streak of blood could be seen on the right side of his face.

Soldiers in military gear were seen rushing into the rally.

Sky News host Paul Murray has labelled US President Joe Biden’s statement on the shooting at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally as “weak”.

“It didn’t have any sense of gravitas to it, and it seemed to be something that automatically he went back into his muscle memory,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Which was to say all those stupid things that you say about Trump as a way of trying to scare people into bringing out the vote.”

“For some reason, this 20-year-old was able to go unimpeded up a ladder to a building and lay flat and carry out this attack.”

Secret Service agents at Trump’s rally should have been paying attention to the “elevated threat,” says former supervisory special agent in the US Secret Service Charles Marino.

Donald Trump was rushed off stage during a Nevada rally after authorities suspected someone in the crowd had a gun. No gun was found on the man who was detained and Trump eventually returned to the stage.

The FBI has officially confirmed the identity of the shooter who attempted to assassinate former US president Donald Trump as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Mr Trump survived the attempt but a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.

The former president was evacuated from the site by Secret Service following the gunshots.

Sky News Australia host James Morrow has reacted to the “extraordinary event” where former US president Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at his Pennsylvania rally.

Mr Morrow commended former prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Scott Morrison for criticising the attack.

“Kevin Rudd called it what it was – an attack,” Mr Morrow said.

“Scott Morrison called it an assassination attempt.”

Sky News host Danica De Giorgio has weighed in on the Secret Service's handling of an assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania.

It comes as eyebrows are being raised over how the Secret Service allowed a bullet to come within millimetres of killing Donald Trump.

A video has surfaced showing the Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle boasting about a desire to increase diversity.

“It’s about hiring on diversity not necessarily about the people who could be doing the right job, but I think that clip will come back to haunt them when they conduct this thorough investigation into what’s gone wrong here because in the end, it's about the right person for the job,” Ms De Giorgio said.

Sky News host James Macpherson has hit out at the Secret Service handling at a rally in Pennsylvania following an assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump.

“They can't holster their guns, they're more concerned with securing their sunglasses than Trump,” Mr Macpherson said.

“They're running around like chooks without heads.”

Sky News Australia host James Morrow says former US president Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt by “millimetres”.

“Literally millimetres difference between clipping the former president apparently on his ear and potentially penetrating his skull – hitting him in the brain,” Mr Morrow said.

“The phrase dodge a bullet, well, I mean this is dodging a bullet right here.”

Gunfire erupted at a Donald Trump rally on Saturday, sparking panic in the crowd and spattering the Republican presidential candidate with blood, before he emerged and defiantly pumped his fist in the air and was ushered to a waiting car.

Trump grimaced and grabbed his ear before security hustled him away, his red "Make America Great Again" hat knocked off. The Secret Service and the former president's campaign said Trump was safe following the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Pittsburgh.

Live video showed blood spattered on Trump's right cheek and ear.

Downing Street in the United Kingdom issued a statement about the shooting:

“We are shocked by the scenes at President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. We condemn all forms of political violence in the strongest terms and we send our best wishes to President Trump and his family at this time."
