“One of the most prominent themes in “Up” is the empowerment of women. Cardi B asserts her dominance as a female rapper in lines like, “If it’s up, then it’s stuck,” which is a phrase she’s used frequently on her social media accounts. This statement means that if someone has a problem with Cardi or her success, they’ll have to deal with it because she’s not going anywhere.
Cardi’s lyrics also address double standards and misogyny in the music industry. Die Geschichte des Hip-Hops reicht vom Rassismus in den USA bis hin zu Tiefkühlpizzen und Eisteesorten in deutschen Supermarktregalen. Rapper wie Sido, Apache 207 oder Bands wie die Fantastischen Vier sind die Gesichter des deutschen Hip-Hop und stehen für ein Musikgenre, das bis in die 1970er zurückgeht.
Seinen Ursprung hat der Hip-Hop in den vernachlässigten Vierteln US-amerikanischer Großstädte, beispielsweise der Bronx in New York. Hier entstehen die vier Grundelemente des Hip-Hop: Breakdance, Graffiti, DJing und MCing bzw. Rapping. Auch wenn bis heute umstritten ist, welche Vertreter nun die „wahre Hip-Hop-DNA” in sich tragen.
Spätestens ab den 1980er Jahren erreicht der Hip-Hop auch Deutschland und verändert nicht nur die deutsche Musikszene, sondern auch den Lifestyle der Jugend. Sowohl in der Bundesrepublik als auch in der DDR entstehen Tanz-Crews, erste deutsche Hip-Hopper treten auf. In den 90er-Jahren wird der Hip-Hop massentauglich: eine Blütezeit mit Liedern wie „Die Da?!“ von den Fantastischen Vier.
Zu sanft für manche Hip-Hop-Fans. Nach der Jahrtausendwende werden die deutschen Rap-Texte häufig aggressiver, die Beats rauer. Künstler wie Sido oder Bushido veröffentlichen ihre ersten Alben.
Heute ist der Hip-Hop vielfältiger denn je: Es gibt harte, zum Teil menschenverachtende Texte und eine vielfältige Selbstinszenierung, aber auch ganz andere Töne: Selbstironische Texte und poppige Autotune-Beats. Seit einigen Jahren machen sich auch immer mehr Frauen wie Shirin David, Loredana oder Nura einen Namen in der deutschen Hip-Hop-Szene.
