Israel said Tuesday it had killed the commander of Hezbollah's southern drone unit, but the Lebanese militant group denied the claim. Israel Defense Forces Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee said they killed Ali Hussein Barji in an airstrike.
The Hezbollah press office said the "commander was never subjected to any assassination attempt." Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite political party and militant group, is considered a terrorist organization by the US, Germany and several Sunni Arab countries, while the EU lists its armed wing as a terrorist group.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israel to make "hard choices" if it wants to normalize relations with its neighbors and support Palestinian leaders willing to live in peace. Blinken has been visiting Israel's Arab neighbors in recent days to discuss plans for the future governance of Gaza and the territory's integration into the wider Middle East. The US and Israel are united in the war against Hamas militants, but sharply divided over Gaza's future. Israel has so far rejected calls to allow the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority, which was ousted from Gaza when the Islamist militant group Hamas seized power in 2007, to govern Gaza, talking instead of maintaining open-ended military control over the territory.

Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (SPD) trifft angesichts zunehmender Proteste von Bauern in Cottbus auf Landwirte. Am Rande der Eröffnung des Bahnwerks will Scholz dort den Brandenburger Bauernpräsident Henrik Wendorff sprechen. In Cottbus ist eine Großdemonstration gegen den Abbau der Diesel-Subventionen mit 500 Fahrzeugen geplant. Insgesamt erwartet der Landesbauernverband Brandenburg mehrere tausend Teilnehmer.
Der Landesbauernpräsident will bei Scholz um mehr Verständnis für die Landwirte werben. «Ich will ihm deutlich machen, dass da kein Spielraum mehr ist, um weitere Kürzungen vorzunehmen», sagte Wendorff der Deutschen Presse-Agentur. Er wolle wissen, ob die Botschaft bei Scholz angekommen sei. Wendorff verwies darauf, dass ohnehin Kürzungen im Bundeshaushalt etwa bei den Mitteln zur Verbesserung der Agrarstruktur und des Küstenschutzes geplant seien. «Es wird weitere Proteste geben. Die Zahl derjenigen, die uns unterstützen, wird größer.»
Seit Montag demonstrieren Bauern in allen Teilen Deutschlands gegen Sparpläne der Bundesregierung in der Landwirtschaft. Die Ampel-Koalition will einlenken und die geplante Abschaffung der Kfz-Steuerbefreiung für die Landwirtschaft verzichten. Die Bauern demonstrieren weiter, denn die Steuerbegünstigung beim Agrardiesel soll weiter entfallen, allerdings schrittweise.
Die Bauern können nicht auf eine Kehrtwende der Bundesregierung hoffen. Regierungssprecher Steffen Hebestreit machte am Mittwoch mit Blick auf das geplante Treffen mit Wendorff deutlich, dass der Kanzler die Regierungsposition noch einmal erläutern wolle. «Aber die Haltung ist klar.»
In anderen Teilen Deutschlands sind am Donnerstag weitere Proteste vorgesehen wie eine Sternfahrt von Landwirten mit 1500 Traktoren nach Frankfurt am Main. In Hannover werden bei einer Kundgebung Hunderte Traktoren sowie Vertreter der Ampel-Koalition erwartet, darunter FDP-Fraktionschef Christian Dürr. Proteste sind auch im Großraum Karlsruhe und dem Rhein-Neckar-Kreis geplant. Zum Abschluss am 15. Januar ist eine Demonstration in Berlin vorgesehen.
Die Mittelstandsinitiative Brandenburg, die die Proteste von Landwirten und Unternehmern am Montag in Cottbus mit rund 2500 Fahrzeugen organisiert hatte, fordert Reformen. «Das, was wir in den letzten zwei Jahren an Leistungen gesehen haben durch die Bundesregierung, ist nicht das, was uns als Mittelstand weiterbringt», sagte der Sprecher des Netzwerks, Thomas Knott. Das wolle er dem Bundeskanzler am Donnerstag deutlich machen. Die Initiative hat etwa 400 Mitglieder aus zahlreichen Branchen.
