In February 2020, a shocking video began to circulate on Chinese social media. A group of African children are being instructed, by a voice off-camera, to chant phrases in Chinese. The kids repeat the words with smiles and enthusiasm — but they don’t understand that what they’re being told to say is “I am a black monster and my IQ is low.” The clip ignited outrage in China and beyond.
But no-one ever answered the crucial questions: Why was this filmed? Where was it shot? Who made it?
These questions send #BBCAfricaEye and #BBCEyeInvestigations reporters Runako Celina and Henry Mhango on a journey into a Chinese video-making industry that exploits vulnerable children across the continent.

Can AI enable us to live forever? Filmmaker Ann Shin sets out on a journey, exploring the latest AI and biotech with scientists and visionaries who foresee a ‘post-biological’ world where humans and AI merge. Will AI be the best or the last thing we ever do?
If you were able to create an immortal version of yourself, would you? Until this decade, that question was the stuff of science fiction, but now experts in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics suggest it will indeed be possible.
This cinematic documentary explores the latest technological advancements in AI, robotics and biotech, and poses the question: what is the essence of the human mind, and can this be replicated? Or even more unsettling, could we one day meet cloned versions of ourselves – clones which are better, smarter, and immortal?
This film explores these questions with visionaries including Nick Bostrom, author of Superintelligence, Hiroshi Ishiguro, developer of his own uncannily realistic clone Geminoid; Douglas Rushkoff, author of Team Human; Ben Goertzel, founder of Singularity.net who coined the term Artificial General Intelligence; and Deepak Chopra, who is creating his own A.I. mind twin. These visionaries see humanity advancing toward a new age of post-biological life, a world of intelligence without bodies, immortal identity without the limitations of disease, death, and unfulfilled desire. As scientists at the forefront of technology show that a world where humans and machines merge isn’t so far away, we have to ask ourselves will AI be the best or the last thing we ever do?

Phantoms of Evolution - The Unknown Underwater Predators | Wildlife Documentary
Watch 'Adventure Ocean Quest: Discovering Another World' here: https://youtu.be/-ppEOgQ10nk
With the aid of modern technology, we reveal the unknown behaviour of some unusual species of sharks: lemon sharks and their white-tip reef counterparts. Our film trip begins on the Bahamas. To be more precise: in the turquoise-blue waters of the Grand Bahama Bank, in an exactly fixed location. In spring, 70 - 80 pregnant lemon sharks arrive here. This huge shark population was first discovered just a few years ago by shark researcher, Professor Sam Gruber. Many of the females are tired and rest on the seabed. Pregnant tiger sharks swim in the midst of this group. Without any protection whatsoever, our cameramen shoot their footage, surrounded by sharks and succeed in capturing images hitherto unseen.
We continue our journey to Gainesville, Florida, to meet Gordon Hubbell, the leading shark denture expert with the world’s largest shark denture collection. He knows everything about the evolutionary history of the lemon sharks, in addition to those of the white-tip reef variety off Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Here, we encounter large schools of fish, unprecedented numbers of stingrays, as well as hammerhead sharks. However, it is the white-tip reek sharks that make the biggest impression. Their performance begins late at night. Marauding, they patrol in large groups through the reefs and hunt everything that moves. Scales and dead prey fish float above the reef - a welcoming change of diet for the ubiquitous barracudas.

Vicious Beauties - The Secret World of the Jellyfish | Ocean Documentary
The family of the jellyfish or medusae are not only the most venomous ocean inhabitants but also some of the deepest divers. Medusae have been found as deep as 8.300 meters. Their existence is paramount to the oceans. Many of the large migrations of fish and mammals would not be possible without the existence of jellies. They are a crucial part of the food chain, many fish feed on jellies and in turn mammals or larger migratory predators feed on fish. The scientist Gerhard Jarms of the Zoological Institute of the University of Hamburg takes us on a journey into the exotic world of jellyfish. He is one of the most renowned medusae scientists in the world. Our expedition begins in the northern Atlantic where we will find the mysterious periphylla. We will continue on to the Azores in the Atlantic. There we will search for the XY jellies that seek shelter in caves in rough seas.
In the Pacific we will swim with the jellies in the famous Jellyfish Lake and last but not
least we will explore some of the world's most beautiful coral reefs of western Papua. And at the very end danger lurks around every corner as we set out to search off Australia's coast for the fatal sea wasp- one of the most poisonous ocean inhabitants. This documentary explores some paradoxes surrounding the idea of alien life. We look at the silicon-based life theory, the dark forest theory of interstellar travel, and the possibility of a paradoxical lack of evidence for alien life.
Ultimately, we attempt to answer the question of why we haven't seen evidence of alien life up until this point. We discuss the potential reasons behind this paradox and explore its implications for our understanding of the Universe.

America’s heroin and opioid crisis has been called the worst drug epidemic in U.S. history. FRONTLINE goes inside the crisis and places it in a fresh and provocative light — telling individual stories of addiction, but also investigating how the heroin epidemic as we know it came to be.

To make Chasing Heroin, Marcela Gaviria and her team, including correspondent Martin Smith, spent nearly a year tracing the lives of addicts like Kristina, who at age 21 is seven years into her heroin addiction and has been living on the streets for three; Johnny, who started using to cope with the breakup of his marriage; and Cari, a suburban mom who led a double life as a heroin dealer.
But in addition to these raw stories of addiction, the documentary investigates big pharma’s unprecedented push to popularize opioid painkillers like Oxycontin and explores how America is rethinking incarceration as a response to drug addiction.

FRONTLINE examined the difficult and emotional decisions that families confront when their loved one is gravely ill, and the complicated reality of dying in an era of modern medicine. (Aired 2010)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: http://www.pbs.org/donate.
In this 2010 documentary, FRONTLINE gained access to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of one of New York’s biggest hospitals. The filmmakers found doctors and nurses struggling to guide families through a maze of end-of-life choices that had become available: whether to pull feeding and breathing tubes, when to perform expensive surgeries and therapies and when to call for hospice. The documentary presented intimate portraits of patients grappling with the trade-offs of modern medicine and the prospect of dying.

Water shapes our landscapes and makes our world unique. Only water can be found on earth in three states of aggregation - gaseous, liquid and solid. This is what makes the molecule so fascinating.
No other substance has been so studied and yet still holds so many questions as water. Scientist try to unlock the secrets of Water. 70% of the earth's surface is covered by liquid water.
The documentary gives us insights into the fascinating landscapes created by water: Underwater worlds, interesting ice worlds and unknown caves. But it also shows us the importance of water for the forest ecosystem and for us as living beings.

Expedition Antarctica | Science Documentary
Antarctica: Ready for Winter: https://youtu.be/jDwwWg7fT7M
In February 2008, a team of the world’s leading marine scientists set out onboard the RV Tangaroa on a voyage like no other across the Great Southern Ocean to Antarctica. In the footsteps of Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition, their mission is to discover more about marine life in Antarctic waters. This is unchartered territory – as many scientists say… ‘less is known about the Antarctic seabed than the surface of Mars!’ Cooped up on a research vessel for 50 days they battle ferocious storms, some of the worst ice conditions ever encountered and personal tragedy. The stakes are high but this is science at the edge. If successful their findings could profoundly affect all our lives as the intrepid crew seek out clues about the future fate of our planet beneath the icy waters of one of the world’s most perilous yet most important oceans.

Deadliest Roads - Peru - Amazon: https://youtu.be/-8ysHFWcGLk
Lake Tannganyika in Tanzania, East Africa is the biggest in the world, and is remarkably beautiful. The Tanzanians have two options to cross it: 20 hours on a pickup truck on a road riddled with potholes or 3 days of sailing on the oldest cargo ship in the world, the LIEMBA. On the track, traders try to reach the market but torrential rain disrupts the route. On the old boat, the passengers are piling up in the crowded holds on the boats. The captain struggles to maintain order.

“Two American Families” raises questions about the U.S. economy and the declining middle class through the stories of the Neumanns and the Stanleys, which began when the breadwinners in both families lost their well-paying factory jobs. For more than two decades, Correspondent Bill Moyers documented their struggle to keep their homes, their health insurance and their dignity.

Can the aging process be reversed - or even halted, altogether? If we manage to decode this final mystery of our human biology, we might soon be able to eradicate age-related illnesses like cancer, dementia and heart problems.
The race to invent the miracle pill is well underway. Today, international researchers are getting astonishingly close to realizing humanity’s dream of immortality.
The hunt for immortality gained traction with the discovery of Costa Rica’s so-called "Blue Zone,” by Luis Rosero-Bixby. In the "Blue Zone,” on the Nicoya Peninsular, he found a remarkable number of centenarians. Here, male life expectancy is the highest in the world. Their healthy lifestyle is one factor, but the promise of longevity is probably also because their telomeres - sections of DNA found at the end of chromosomes - are longer than those of the average person.
It’s a field of research currently being explored by Maria Blasco in Madrid. But this is just one of many possible factors influencing the process of aging. Senescent cells may also play a key role. Also known as "zombie cells”, these attack our body in old age and flood it with alarm signals until, at some point, we collapse under their weight. That’s a theory proposed by another researcher in Spain, Manuel Serrano.
A billion-dollar industry is already knocking impatiently at the lab doors. The first to market the miracle pill is guaranteed incredible wealth. That’s why investors are sponsoring young bio-startups in Hong Kong. Keen not be left out, US Big Tech is vying for the world’s best scientists. Alex Zhavoronkov has secured a slice of that pie, with a cash injection of more than 250 million dollars for his company’s work on aging research.
Whereas some pioneers’ visions burst like bubbles, others rush to get other, rather more dubious products onto the market. But their efficacy is now measurable. The epigenetic clock devised by Steve Horvath can measure our biological age, regardless of our actual age in years.
With his research on the thymus gland, California’s Greg Fahy managed to not only decelerate the aging process, but reverse it. His initial study on humans showed that a particular drug cocktail took an average two-and-a-half years off their age.
Young biohackers like Nina Khera from Boston want everyone to benefit from this research. Together with friends, she’s working on the "epigenetic clock for all”.
But while we’re busy trying to counter the aging process and all the illnesses it entails, fundamental questions arise: Should we be messing with nature like this? Are we about to overwhelm the planet with more and more people? Criminal biologist Mark Benecke in Cologne says that these questions are coming far too late.

FRONTLINE shines a light on the hidden world of the North Korean people, revealing how ordinary citizens are resisting one of the world’s most oppressive regimes. (Aired 2014)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: http://www.pbs.org/donate.
Kim Jong-un rules one of the world’s most isolated countries with an iron fist. Like his father and grandfather, he is trying to maintain tight control over what the world sees of North Korea—and what North Koreans see of the world.
But as FRONTLINE reveals in the 2014 documentary, “Secret State of North Korea,” not only are North Koreans illegally smuggling out information from inside North Korea, a growing cohort of defectors are risking their lives to get information about the outside world. How far will the regime go to hold onto power—and how far will the dissenters and defectors go in challenging Kim Jong-un’s authority?
